The Parent Connection brings San Diego families together to provide support, share experiences, enjoy social activities and build lasting relationships.

 

The Parent Connection offers a wide variety of childcare classes, family education and support programs.  Medical experts, marriage and family professionals and many other parenting related experts help guide our members through the challenges of parenting from potty training to puberty.

Parent Connection Classes January - March 2012

Pregnancy

 

Basic Training for Dads-to-Be:  The Third Trimester

Saturdays - January 21, February 11, March 17, 9:30am - 12:00pm, Scripps Mende Well Being-UTC

We're looking for a few good dads-to-be! With a baby on the way, your life is about to change profoundly. Our basic training class allows expectant dads the opportunity to hear firsthand accounts from experienced dads who have been through it all. Learn about what to expect in the last trimester of pregnancy, at the birth, during the first few weeks at home and more. Our expert dads, accompanied by their infants, will provide practical tips on diapering, feeding and soothing a newborn. This class provides an experience you can't get from reading a book or attending a childbirth class.

Prenatal Yoga & Aquatics

Yoga is Mondays, 5:00pm - 5:50pm

Aquatics is Wed. & Fri., 9:30am - 10:20am

A safe and effective workout for women who are more than twelve weeks pregnant that want to stay active and fit during pregnancy.

Both classes held at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine, Shiley Sports and Health Center.

Newborn/Babies

 

Basic Training for New Dads - The First Year

Saturday, February 4, 9:30am - 12:00pm, Scripps Mende Well Being-UTC

During the first year, there is so much to learn while juggling work and personal responsibilities. This parenting class is offered as a sequel to the Basic Training for Dads-to-be class and addresses the issues most relevant to fathers who have newborns to 1-year-old.

Bootcamp for New Moms

Classes held Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Reshape your body, flatten your tummy and get your energy back with this dynamic cross-training workout that includes cardiovascular, strength and flexibility exercises.

A certified and experienced instructor will take you through a 6-week series of classes that maximize fat burning and improve resting metabolic rate.

Cost: $215 for 12 classes.

Get Acquainted with the Parent Connection

Friday, January 27, 10:00am - 11:00am, Scripps Mende Well Being-UTC

Bring your babies, 0-6 months old to learn more about how to get involved in a neighborhood playgroup or even to start one yourself. You'll meet other parents with young babies to learn about the benefits of Parent Connection and what the organization can do to help you along the maze of parenthood. Reality Check: Surviving the First Six Weeks of Parenthood

Wednesday, January 18, 6:30pm - 8:30pm, Scripps Mende Well Being - UTC

Come learn how life changes for new parents - the joys, the challenges, the reality! This two-hour class taught by postpartum doulas will help you prepare for the journey into parenthood. You'll learn what to purchase and what NOT to purchase when preparing to bring baby home, how to diplomatically let visitors know how to be the best visitors, and what is realistic information on baby's eat and sleep patterns. There will be suggestions for mom's recovery and guidelines for partners on how they can help and much more. The cost for this class is $20/couple.

The 90 Minute Baby Sleep Program: Follow Your Child's Natural Rhythms for a Better Night and Naps

This class offers information on baby's sleep requirements and other valuable information about a baby's sleep rhythm during the first year of life. Our speaker Dr. Polly Moore, will discuss ways to help your baby sleep better, cry less, improve her/his learning and more fully enjoy the world. Dr. Moore will have her book available to purchase and have it signed.

All About Ear Infections

The amount of data on this painful and sometimes chronic condition can be overwhelming and frustrating. Our guest speaker, Dr. Ochi, an Assistance Professor of Surgery at UCSD, will help you get through the maze of information on why children get ear infections, what can be done to prevent them, what problems results from repeated ear infections, and how ear infections should be treated. Bring your questions and babies are welcome to attend.

9 Things to Do Besides Spanking
Tuesday, January 17, 6:30pm - 9:00pm, Scripps Coastal Medical Group - Carlsbad, Breakroom A

Do you get frustrated hearing yourself say NO! NO! NO! Discover how positive discipline can make those frustrating "Nos" vanish. Our speaker Jackie Hartman, will discuss how to use positive reinforcement to encourage good behavior. You'll learn the difference between discipline and punishment and, more importantly, how to keep your child's self-esteem intact, thereby decreasing the possibility of future behavioral problems. Redirecting Children's Behavior

Various times and dates in Carlsbad/Carmel Valley and La Jolla

Enhance your parenting skills through this powerful and practical 5-week course that teaches effective parenting skills in a supportive, loving and nonjudgemental atmosphere. Learn the four principles of why children misbehave and how to nurture self-sufficient, responsible and self-confident children by using techniques that build mutual respect, create positive motivational messages, prevent sibling rivalry and minimize power struggles. This course is taught by supportive and experienced instructors.

Spirited Child Workshop

Will Writing Workshop

Monday, January 23, 7:00pm -9:00pm, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla, Schaetzel Center, Walker Room

What Happens to Your Children if Something Happens to You? Every parent should have, at the very least, a Will, designating who will be guardian of your children if something happens to you. This workshop, presented by the attorneys of the estate planning firm, DenHerder & Associates will teach you the ins and outs of Wills versus Living Trusts and by the end of the evening you will have completed your own Holographic Will, with guardianship designations, to take care of this very issue.
