Movie Review: Brave

Disney Pixar’s “Brave” follows the heroic journey of Merida, a skilled archer and headstrong daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the unruly and uproarious lords of the land….

Movie Review by Ann Scott who was invited to preview the movie.

This film is very entertaining with incredible detailed graphic animation and is action packed!   Merida is a great character and role model for individuality.  The music and scenery (in 3-D) of Scotland was beautiful.  You really get a sense of the land.   Disney Pixar did an amazing job creating breath-taking visuals for this film.

Merida is a princess who tries to “buck the system” and change the rules for her gender and position in the family.  She is fierce, stubborn, skilled, strong and BRAVE.  In the end, after many trials and tribulations she is able to change her history.

There are many great messages throughout; individualism, inner strength, family bonds, mother/daughter relationship, and standing up for what you believe in.   All the while providing very funny moments and comical characters – especially Merida’s devilish little brothers and the Scottish clan kings.

There were also some scary moments, very early on and throughout.  I took my 6 and 9 year old.  They both agreed that anyone under 6 might be really scared watching  parts of the movie.  The film is rated PG “for some scary action and rude humor”.   The rude humor is for the most part family friendly and just plain silly.

With all the great messages, amazing visuals and happy ending, I would definitely recommend this film.
